Dark was always crowned for being the most confusing show, up until last episode. Going back and forth on timeline or unbreakable node between 4 families in a small German town winden. In the season final, series have answer “how everything is connected”. The series have used the philosopher’s concept of ‘eternal recurrence’ and constant use of logical paradox. The director of dark, Baran bo Odar previously worked on techno-thriller “Who Am I – No System Is Safe” reached the top of the German cinema charts.
Dark first aired on 1 December 2017 after that 2nd season on 21june 2019 followed by 3rd and final season on 27 June 2020 all on Netflix. It consists of 26 episodes starring Jonas Kahnwald (Louis Hofmann), Michael Kahnwald (Daan Lennard Liebrenz), Hannah Kahnwald (Ella Lee), Martha Nielsen (Lisa Vicari), Ulrich Nielsen (Oliver Masucci) and many more. Actually, every character is important cause its somehow linked. The actors have job beautiful job in creating this master piece.
Mind blowing story with the fusion of complex characters. Comprise of numerous interesting concepts; what will happen if your daughter marries a man in the past and gives birth to you. Many philosophical concepts of time are questioned in the show. Story starts with the suicide of Jonas father Micheal and the disappearance of Mikkel the son of Ulrich and Katherine. there is a cave in the fictitious town of winden, the cave is a passage in time a wormhole scientifically connecting two space and time 2019 and 1986 it allows time travel for 33 years. Mikkel gets lost in the woods and goes in the cave and unwittingly travels to 1986 where he meets Hannah which is Jonas mother and marries him thus becoming Jonas father. Now Mikkel of 2019 was 14 years old and there is Micheal (Mikkel from past) who is 37 years old. Jonas is in love with Martha who is a teenager in 2019(sister of Mikkel and thus becoming aunt of Jonas) also Hannah Jonas mother having an affair with Ulrich who is Father in law of her and Jonas Grandfather in present. Charlotte a police officer in Winden doesn’t know about her parents which is revealed in second season that her father is Noah a time traveller and Antagonist and hear this her mother is actually her own daughter Elisabeth who somehow travels to future; marries Noah and gives birth to Charlotte thus becoming her mother’s mother another paradox. Martha from different but parallel world comes; tries to changes everything thus that means that people are not traveling in different time but can travels in different timeline. Season 1 and 2 are muddled would hard to watch but impossible to stop, Season 3 is alike. Up Until the final episodes of final season exposed everything in a simple way. But this distinction the drake from other series.
Dark have one of the best ever cinematography on Netflix. Shot on Alexa 65 and Mini. The lighting is naturalistic while still being evocative and meaningful. the sound design, composer Ben Frost’s original background score, and the amazing soundtrack choices surpass every department of creativity.
If you are into parallel world, black hole, white hole and loop hole kind of stuff then this show is your cup of cake. Dark ended masterfully by symbiotic relationship between endings and beginnings. There’s no light without dark, not victory without sacrifice and no love without out lost. Show have even maintained theory of “what we know is drop, what we don’t know is ocean”. This is the show that everyone show watch, once in life.
