The videogame dependency and addiction can occur anywhere with all different types of children especially in a world that is becoming even more technologically advanced with increased media advertisements, electronic stimuli and pressures from school society. Children are turning video games and other forms of electronics to escape which ultimately can lead to a vicious cycle of video game dependency because of increased videogame usage in our societies around the world, children are suffering from the negative effects of game play. Let’s take a look at how the sustainability issue begins what the system behaviors are the system traps leverage points and the solutions.
Children today experience many pressures from school, homework, parents and society which then could lead them to want to escape through video games, Playing video games may help relieve stress temporarily for these children but with continued use, it can cause a vicious cycle. Study pressures lead to game playing and continued game playing leads to even more pressures in school, with the rapid growth of technology it is impossible for kids and teenagers to keep up and focus on their studies. Especially with the new video games that are coming out of the market frequently the downside of this is that children and teenagers lack the real skill, they need with their studies such as social interaction and being inquisitive. Children that are spending too much staring at electronic screens can cause them to have physical changes in the brain that can lead to attention and behavior problems. Technology that plays strongly on the senses like video games can literally blow the mind by temporarily or permanently deactivating certain nerve connections in the brain. Screen technologies cause high arousal which in turn activates the brain system underlying addiction reward resulting in the attraction of yet even more screen based activity.
Children now rely on the technology for majority of their play, grossly limiting challenges to their creativity and their imaginations as well as limiting necessary challenges to their bodies to achieve optimal sensory and motor development. The world of digital technology in all realms of life isn’t going away but if students don’t learn how to concentrate and shut out distractions, research shows they’ll have much harder time succeeding in almost every area. The real message is that we have more distractions than ever before and parents must teach their children important attention skills and limit their use of technology.
Four critical factors necessary to achieve healthy child development are movement, touch, human connection and exposure to nature. Nature and green space not only a calming influence on children but also is attention restorative and promotes learning. The consequences of video game play is a sustainability issue because children are becoming less social with friends and family, lack community involvement due to excessive video game play. Economically, video games are consumer product that generates revenue but they are only looking through a consumer-based lens and failed to realize that video games are also disconnecting children with their environments and communities. Environmentally, children are spending more time indoors and less time outside in their natural environments, their appreciation for nature decreases with less time outside and children begin to see nature is something that they don’t value or want to protect.
